Lessons in Electric Circuits was compiled from years of lecture notes and ideas, with the primary goal was to put readable, high-quality information of industrial electronics into the hands of students, yet keep the book as affordable as possible. This book was written to be a good enough book without delving too heavy on the math, while still maintaining a lot of important information.

It must be mentioned that although the book strives to maintain technical accuracy in all of its content, the subject matter is broad and harbors many potential dangers. Electricity maims and kills without provocation, and deserves the utmost respect. Experimentation on the part of the reader is strongly encouraged, but only with circuits powered by small batteries where there is no risk of electric shock, fire, explosion, etc. High-power electric circuits should be left to the care of trained professionals! The Design Science License clearly states that neither the author nor any contributors to this book bear any liability for what is done with its contents.

Simulating with SPICE:

One way to reduce the necessity of setting up your own laboratory, is to utilize computer simulation. One particular computer program called SPICE serves that purpose. It is a text-based piece of software intended to model circuits and provide analyses of voltage, current, frequency, etc. Although nothing is quite as good as building real circuits to gain knowledge in electronics, computer simulation is an excellent alternative.

One of the advantages is that SPICE could be used within a textbook to present circuit simulations to allow students to "observe" the phenomena for themselves. This way, the readers could learn the concepts inductively (by interpreting SPICE's output) as well as deductively (by interpreting the book's explanations). Furthermore, in seeing SPICE used over and over again, they should be able to understand how to use it themselves, providing a perfectly safe means of experimentation on their own computers with circuit simulations of their own design.

The Game Boy Advance is a sophisticated handheld video game machine, with a powerful 32-bit microprocessor, 16-bit graphics, stereo digital sound, and yet small enough to fit in your pocket. Over 140 million units sold in all, making GBA the highest selling video game system in history. The affordable price of the Game Boys, large library of games, relatively low price of games and accessories, plus portability make this a very compelling video game system. Even so, until recently, it was nearly impossible for a hobby or student programmer to get involved in the console market. The goal of this book is to get you a job as a Game Boy Advance programmer. Although you may be a hobby programmer, or perhaps a professional video game developer already, the basis and assumption for this book is that you are an aspiring game programmer. The result is a very focused book that stays close to the subject matter, and as a result it is not as large as some books. However, those are books about writing PC games, while this is a console programming book.

Intended Audience:

You will need to be proficient in the C language in order to follow along in this book. Because if you want to be a game programmer, you must know C already. If you don't know C at all, you will definitely need a primer before getting into the later chapters of this book. This book doesn't cover C++ because it is overkill for Game Boy Advance development. Most of the important aspects of programming the Game Boy Advance (such as sprites) are handled by the built-in hardware routines, and don't require extensive programmer intervention. This book does not cover C++, but you may still use of C++ for writing Game Boy programs if you like. since the development tools includes a C++ compiler.

This book serves as an introduction to the C++ language. It teaches how to program in C++ and how to properly use its features. It does not attempt to teach object-oriented design to any depth.

There are three goals:

First, to produce a concise introductory text, free from unnecessary verbosity, so that beginners can develop a good understanding of the language in a short period of time.

Second, to combine a tutorial style (based on explanation of concepts through examples) with a reference style (based on a flat structure). As a result, each chapter consists of a list of relatively short sections (mostly one or two pages), with no further subdivision. This, further simplifies the reader?s task.

Third, the author have avoided trying to present an absolutely complete description of C++. While no important topic has been omitted, descriptions of some of the minor idiosyncrasies have been avoided for the sake of clarity and to avoid overwhelming beginners with too much information. Experience suggests that any small knowledge gaps left as a result, will be easily filled over time through self-discovery.

Although the book is primarily designed for use in undergraduate computer science courses, it will be equally useful to professional programmers and hobbyists who intend to learn the language on their own.

This draft is first created to accompany the already established collection of FXT libraries by the same author, on the fast transforms and low level algorithms. So far there has been 23 chapters of selected algorithms, each contains the necessary theorems and the corresponding code. While some topics (like Fast Fourier Transforms) need a clear and explicit introduction, some others (like the bit wizardry chapter) seem to be best presented by basically showing the code with just a few comments. The pseudo language Sprache is used mainly when the corresponding C++ does not appear to be self-explanatory. Still, larger pieces of code are presented in C++.

The theorem parts is presented in a straightforward and point-to-point style, useful for both learning and quick reference purposes. And the implementation source code is kept in a strict and optimized style. And since I'm personally not very fond of devouring algorithm theorems with those curly mathematic notations, I found the source code really helpful in understanding them.

Overall, this is a nice collection of algorithms in a compact and no-nonsense style with reasonably optimized working code and pseudo-code. Definitely will do a great favor for students of computer science.

Since this book is still a draft, the readers are welcome to criticize and make suggestions. Publication is planned for summer 2005.
